Being Buried Alive

I love coming up with clever titles.

I've always been jealous of those people who come up with the witty one-line newspaper headlines, because summing up in one sentence is just not my thang . I'm much better at the details and the story. All that to say... you will soon see the cleverness of my title.

Yesterday, I went with the bff to pick up her kid from the babysitters. While waiting in the living room for the dear little one's diaper to be changed, a tv commercial caught my attention as it was a preview for a new show called "the Buried Life." Normally, I see anything that airs on MTv to be positively beneath me since the cultural aptitude of the station is less than desirable. However, it seems MTv has taken a change of heart when it comes to this new show.

"The Buried Life" follows four canadian boys (swoon... already got you hooked, eh?) in their quest for accomplishing their life goals. Sounds kind of selfish at first, right? But accomplishing their goals isn't just what they're about. For every one goal that they accomplish, they help a stranger accomplish one of their own. (Now the real swooning begins.)

People helping people.

That's one of my favorite things in the world. Not only are they sucking the marrow out of life, they're inspiring others to start living as well.

So... what's on your list? What do you want to accomplish before you die? Will you live the Buried Life or be buried alive?

Postcards!!

I am in love with snail mail.

Completely and totally, inlove.

Needless to say, postcrossing.com is an avid, albeit recent, hobby of mine.
To date I have sent 8 postcards all over the world... to Germany, Japan, Lithuania, Croatia.. just to name a few.

And Today, January 13th, I got my very first postcard!

Knowing my love of languages, i requested that if anyone sent me a postcard, for the to send it in their native language... and that is exactly what I got!

A postcard from Nurnberg, Germany... in German!
Hazzah!

Sunday

Today was the first morning I'd been to church in awhile. A couple weeks ago I stayed up ridiculously late watching the last two seasons of LOST and wound up messing up my sleep schedule for what seemed like eternity. So, today my schedule finally allowed for church in the morning.

So... little did I know that going to church this morning would involve much more attention than I ever wanted. Everyone seemed to already know that I'm leaving for Honduras...

And anyone I could ever want to tell would already know by the end of service. How, you ask? Because Pastor called me out.
In the middle of service.
He calls out my name, walks down from the stage and starts talking to me, or about me rather. It was completely unnerving. I've never had that happen before and wasn't quite sure how to react. Here pastor is, in front of me, talking about my future and the decisions I'm making (because it relates to his message) and I feel like I'm about to throw up.

So he announces to everyone that "Summer is going to the mission field."
Mission Field? I'd never really thought about it that way.
"Summer's going to live in Honduras and teach english at the school we built."
[insert gasps and "Oh my gawhs" here]

I never really thought about what I'm doing as being Mission Work. I think it's because it scares me when I look at it in those terms. To me, missions always seemed like you needed to "win over souls for Christ." Thinking about it that way, kind of intimidates me. Am I responsible enough to be someone's leader in Christianity? Am I a missionary?

Saturday

Snow

So, it seems i am utterly incapable of escaping freezing weather. For the past 2 weeks the high has only been 54. 54!! And to top it all off, last night it snowed. SNOW! IN FLORIDA! Hasn't happened in almost 20 years i think, and it happens now. Picture proof. Snow on the screened in pool. Snow on the hammock. Snow on the elephant leaves... all of these nice Florida things tainted by snow.

Granted it all looks like salt... but it's the closest thing we've had in awhile.

#23

so. It's less than a week into the New Year and whenever I go to update my blog, I'm confronted with that formidable list of New Years Resolutions. I'm antsy to check them off and accomplish all of them, so everytime I log on and read them over and realize I'm no where close to accomplishing any of them, my heart sinks.

So.. I made it my mission to accomplish one of them yesterday... so I did. I went to watch Leap Year, because it looked absolutely adorable, and decided I would use this moment to accomplish one of my goals.

After perusing fandango and crunching numbers I realized I could easily go to the 2:25 showing of Leap Year, and get out just in time to watch Sherlock Holmes. So... after watching Leap Year
(and freaking out because it takes place in Ireland and in Boston- both of which I've been to in the last year) I used my highly toned ninja skills (thank you Sydney Bristow!) to sneak into Sherlock Holmes.
It was incredibly invigorating sliding along the walls, avoiding the cameras and having my heart race everytime someone walked into the theater, thinking they would be security coming to kick me out. Plus, I saved money... and we all know how much I enjoy that. And before the movie, I saw two movies that took place in Italy... I think it's a sign. ;)
